Anzac Day preparations underway
Anzac Day will be commemorated around Bass Coast Shire once again at a number of cenotaphs and war memorials around the region.
Bass Coast Shire Council staff have been busy preparing for the annual event with Council responsible for maintaining cenotaphs in Cowes, San Remo, Bass, Grantville, Wonthaggi and Inverloch.
The preparations begin three to four weeks prior to Anzac Day with a range of staff from the Parks and Gardens Department involved, including Mowing, Horticulture, Maintenance, Litter and Tree Teams, as well as the Building Maintenance Team.
Areas around the cenotaphs need to be watered, any fallen branches or debris removed, inspection of trees and any resulting works undertaken, and garden beds must be prepared with mulch and plants replaced if required.
Council’s Parks Supervisor, Richard Clarkson, said an addition to the garden beds are the rose bushes at Wonthaggi’s Soldiers Reserve planted last year to represent soldiers who served in war from the local area.
“Following on from the Anzac Centenary celebrations, we now place a number of wooden crosses built by the Wonthaggi Men’s Shed in a militarised formation,” Mr Clarkson said.
“These again represent those who served from this area.”
The lawns must also be initially cut a few weeks beforehand to get the grass to a good height so that when it is mown again prior to the day, there are no windrows left behind.
To complete the job, staff pressure wash the cenotaphs themselves, as well as any statues and surrounding concrete area, and check and repair any lighting at the sites in preparation for the many Dawn Services that take place.
