Bass Coast builds on community assets

Over 70 community members and service providers recently attended a Community Building Masterclass, facilitated by Cormac Russell, at the Inverloch RACV Resort.

Cormac Russell is a leading expert in community building, specialising in Asset Based Community Development, or ABCD.

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, explained that ABCD is about building communities from their strongest points and ‘assets’.

“Communities and community groups have many untapped strengths. Asset Based Community Development emphasises that communities work at optimum levels when working to their strengths,’ Cr Rothfield said.

Gippsport’s Gene Parini attended the Masterclass, the second of its kind, hosted by Council, since 2016.

Gene said the masterclass provided excellent tools and techniques for working with the community.

‘Community is at its strongest when groups and individuals are coming from a position of passion and strength. The phrase ‘work with what’s strong not what wrong’, really resonates with me,” he said.

Bass Coast Shire Council is a strong proponent of the Asset Based Community Development model.

“There are many projects which evidence the validity of Asset Based Community Development, Woni Proud project is a good example,” explained the Mayor.

“Woni Proud brings the community together to identify opportunities and drive projects to revitalise Wonthaggi’s town centre.”

The first Woni Proud community initiative will be held on Saturday19th May at the Apex Park, Wonthaggi.

“The community has planned an excellent day of family activities at Apex Park as a way of ‘testing’ the idea of a Town Square concept.”
