Bass Coast Rural Engagement Group

Summary

What: Rural Engagement Group Information Session

Where: Civic Centre Council Chamber, Wonthaggi

When: Thursday, 13 June starting at 6.00pm

Why: Council is seeking expressions of interest from those involved in agriculture in Bass Coast to take part in a new advisory committee called the Rural Engagement Group.

Agriculture makes up a significant portion of the Bass Coast economy and what farmers think is important to Bass Coast Shire Council.

In recent years, Council has met with local farmers to discuss farm rates and other matters that impact on their viability and sustainability, and now wants to take these meetings a step further.

Council is seeking expressions of interest from those involved in agriculture in Bass Coast to take part in a new advisory committee called the Rural Engagement Group (REG). The establishment of a REG will give farmers the chance to voice their views, issues or concerns to Council. In return, the REG will enable Council to engage directly with representatives of the rural sector and consider their views. Further, bringing matters directly to Council will allow Council to provide farmers with assistance that is available in a timely manner. Members will be selected to ensure the REG represents geographical locations, rural activity type, and farm size.

An information session will be held on Thursday, 13 June in the Civic Centre Council Chamber, Wonthaggi, commencing 6.00pm. This meeting will be used as an opportunity to inform the farming sector about the role of the Rural Engagement Group and to encourage them to nominate to be part of the group.

The primary stakeholders are those who undertake agricultural activities in the rural areas of the Shire.

Other stakeholders to be invited include:

  • Landcare
  • Department of Primary Industries (DPI)
  • Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF)
  • Agribusiness Gippsland
  • Councillors and Council Officers
