Closing The Lid On Landfill

Bass Coast Shire Council is nearing the completion of the rehabilitation of closed landfill cells at the Grantville Landfill.

Council’s General Manager Sustainable Development and Growth, Allison Jones, said this work has involved the covering of a number of landfill cells that have reached capacity to form a barrier between the waste and the surrounding environment.

“This barrier prevents the landfill from impacting on the environment by managing leachate, which is water that has come into contact with waste, and landfill gas,” Ms Jones said.

“The capping also prevents moisture, including rainfall, from reaching the waste, therefore reducing the amount of leachate generated by the landfill.”

Ms Jones said the capping and gas system will assist in maintaining high air quality at the Grantville Landfill and meet the Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA) requirements for environmental monitoring.

“The site will also be revegetated using indigenous plant species to beautify the site as well as to slow storm water runoff and prevent erosion,” Ms Jones said.
