Friends Group sought for Wonthaggi Cemetery
Are you interested in local history, enjoy being outdoors and would like to meet new people? The Wonthaggi Cemetery Trust has a proposition for you!
The Trust is seeking expressions of interest from community members to re-establish the Wonthaggi Cemetery Friends Group consisting of local volunteers.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Kimberley Brown, said the Trust would like to form a group of up to 10 willing volunteers, much like the Friends Group for the San Remo Cemetery.
“The San Remo Cemetery has a very active Friends Group that is dedicated to maintaining the presentation of the Cemetery and works closely with the Trust on projects,” Cr Brown said.
“A highlight for the Friends Group was the establishment of the memorial garden which has created a serene place for reflection.”
The Wonthaggi Cemetery Friends Group would participate in maintenance work and general tasks at the cemetery to enhance the environment for loved ones to visit in peace, comfort and tranquillity.
These tasks would include:
Assisting with family history enquiries
Assisting to map and research the old monumental section
The group would operate under the direction of the Trust and will formally meet two times per year at the cemetery to plan and carry out works and at other times as required.
“Council has a clear direction for the cemetery and is beginning to implement the Master Plan adopted in July this year,” Cr Brown said.
“The critical way forward is to have members of the community work with us, and establishing a Friends Group is the first step towards doing this.”
If you are interested in joining this group, please express your interest in relation to the tasks listed above and send it to firstname.lastname@example.org or PO Box 118, Wonthaggi, 3995.
