Humanitarian Focus For International Women's Day
International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world throughout the month of March to inspire women and celebrate their achievements.
As part of the celebrations, Bass Coast Shire Council will be hosting an International Women’s Day Brunch with the theme ‘The Power of One’, focussing on the incredible humanitarian efforts of two local women.
The guest speakers at this year’s event will be Jude Donahoo and Jan Hewitt.
Ms Donahoo is the founder of You Are My Sunshine Foundation (YAMS), a charity established in September 2009 in memory of Jude’s beloved granddaughter, Kahlilla, who was a neuroblastoma sufferer.
The YAMS Foundation’s focus is to fund research with the aim of finding a cure for neuroblastoma – an aggressive and often deadly childhood cancer that affects young children.
To date, YAMS has raised over half a million dollars and has funded all research into the illness in Victoria. Fully run by volunteers, 100 per cent of funds raised go to the research program.
Ms Hewitt said whilst visiting a small orphanage in Siem Reap in Cambodia in 2008, she was struck by the conditions and difficulties faced by children, as well as the lack of education opportunities for them.
Upon return, she sent clothing and educational materials to the orphanage, before creating ‘Jan’s Plan’ to fundraise for young adults from the orphanage to continue onto tertiary education.
Ms Hewitt has raised around $12,000 every year and has helped two students graduate from school, whilst five more are currently studying.
The brunch will be held at RACV Resort Inverloch on Friday, 28 March from 11.00am until 1.00pm.
Tickets are $38 per person and include brunch, two guest speakers, a gift and door prize. Tickets go on sale on Monday, 17 March 2014. For tickets, contact Lauren Grylls or Samantha Bennett on 1300 BCOAST (226 278). Numbers are limited, so please book early to avoid missing out.
