Job Shadow Day at Bass Coast Shire Council

Bass Coast Shire Council hosted six individuals for Work Solutions Gippsland’s initiative, Job Shadow Day, last Thursday. The event aims to promote equal employment opportunities, to bring people with disabilities or who experience barriers to employment and local employers together for one day, and to highlight the valuable contribution these people can have in the workplace.

The individuals were paired up with buddies in six departments across Council: Youth Services, Human Resources, Environment, Customer Services, Information Technology and Tourism in Economic Development.

The individuals are matched to their mentors and departments according to their passions, interests and skills. By shadowing their buddy for a day, they will gain a broader understanding of Council, and potential career pathways.

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, welcomed the participants, and explained the value of the program.

“As well as providing an opportunity for the participants to get an inside view of Council, we look forward to hearing from the participants on what the boundaries and challenges are for people trying to be involved in the workforce,” Cr Rothfield said.

“Council is committed to equal opportunities and we look forward to hearing how we can play our part to promote and encourage an inclusive workplace.”

Job Shadow Day is run annually in September coordinated by Work Solutions Gippsland. The program is open to any local businesses that are committed to equal opportunities and welcoming people with a disability.
