New Library To Open Its Doors With A Day Of Celebration

The new Bass Coast Principal Library at Wonthaggi will open on Saturday, 14 December with a full day celebration of fun for all ages.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Acting Community and Economic Development Director, Antoinette Mitchell, invited the community to come down and celebrate the opening of their new Library.

“We’re all very excited to open the doors to show what the new Library looks like and the new services it has to offer,” Ms Mitchell said.

West Gippsland Regional Library Corporation (WGRLC) staff have been working around the clock to move from the old building in time for the official opening.

“We like to think of the opening as an early Christmas present for our community and library lovers around the region,” WGRLC CEO, John Murrell, said.

“It will be a great chance for people to come and check out the fantastic new space, collection items and our new extended Saturday opening hours.”

The opening will begin at 9.30am with Welcome to Country by Aunty Carolyn Briggs, Senior Elder of the Boon Wurrung People, and the Library will be officially opened by The Hon Ken Smith MP. The Wonthaggi Genealogy Society will also be on hand to show-off their brand new home in the Library and share information about their services.

The day will include something for everyone, with book giveaways, face-painting, a visit from Santa and a very special appearance at 11.00am by Playschool’s Justine Clarke, author of the award winning children’s book The Gobbledygook is Eating a Book.

“This new Library raises the benchmark for our region,” West Gippsland Regional Library Corporation Board member, Cr Jordan Crugnale, said.

“With double the number of computers and four times the floor-space it will be a true community-hub for Wonthaggi and surrounds, and a fine example of a 21st Century library.”

The Library project was made possible with funding of $300,000 from the State Government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure Fund and a $200,000 contribution from Bass Coast Shire Council. The grant funds have enabled the Bass Coast Principal Library to be developed to meet the needs of the community well into the next decade.

The Bass Coast Principal Library at Wonthaggi will open on Saturday 14 December 9.30am – 4pm. For further information call 5622 2849 or visit www.wgrlc.vic.gov.au
