New Year's Eve fireworks for Cowes

New Year’s Eve will be celebrated with a Carnivale event including a fireworks display in Cowes this year after Council approved a permit at Wednesday night's meeting.

The Phillip Island San Remo Young Professionals (PISRYP) lodged the event permit application for the Phillip Island New Year’s Eve 2015 Carnivale in Thompson Avenue and The Esplanade in Cowes in October.

The group proposed to conclude the day time event with a 9.30pm fireworks display on the Cowes foreshore; however the proposed street closure and fireworks had received opposition from some local traders and organisations.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Jordan Crugnale, said Council granted the event permit following a position adopted in Council in April 2014 to support any fireworks run by a community group at 9.30pm on New Year's Eve.

“Council is happy to grant a permit to proceed due to the significant support from local traders for the event, and the applicant’s willingness to work with objectors to alleviate their concerns,” Cr Crugnale said.

Fireworks displays will also be held on New Year’s Eve in Coronet Bay and Inverloch at 9.30pm.
