Office Accommodation Upgrade
The CEO, Allan Bawden, responds to this week’s editorial in the South Gippsland Sentinel Times, criticising Council for spending money on upgrades to the Civic Centre offices
The current upgrades to the Civic Centre are part of a staged renovation to ensure there is adequate work space for the next 10 years.
As an employer, Council has an obligation to provide appropriate accommodation for staff, in line with WorkSafe and OH&S requirements. In addition, we know that suitable workspaces increase both the morale and productivity of staff. This means better outcomes for ratepayers and our community.
On average, Council has spent less than 0.2 per cent per annum of Council’s total current budget on meeting staff accommodation needs.
The renovations will not provide luxury accommodation. However, they will result in a modern, appropriate, open-space work environment that promotes collaboration and improved work practices and helps us to continue to attract great staff.
As one of the biggest employers in the Shire, Council makes a huge contribution to the local economy and takes its responsibilities to employees seriously.
