Permanent Detox Site In Wonthaggi

Bass Coast Shire residents can now benefit from the free, easy-to-use service to safely dispose of household paint, batteries and CFLs thanks to a new facility that has opened in Wonthaggi.

Located at the Wonthaggi Waste Transfer and Recycling Centre at 180 Cameron Street, Wonthaggi, the facility is part of a network of permanent drop-off sites, which the Victorian Government is expanding from 12 sites to up to 30 sites across the state to improve access for all Victorian householders.

Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor, Cr Kimberley Brown, encouraged householders to take advantage of the free service to safely dispose of paint and other potentially hazardous products without harming human health or the environment.

“The Wonthaggi permanent drop-off site provides householders with a safe and convenient service that can be accessed throughout the year to dispose of household paint, batteries, fluorescent tubes and CFLs,” Cr Brown said.

Cr Brown said that while the dangers associated with improper disposal of household paint, batteries and CFLs cannot always be seen straight away; these products can pollute the environment for future generations, as well as harm their health.

“Household paint, batteries and CFLs can harm your children, your pets and the environment. Please do not pour paint down the drain or put these products out with your regular rubbish collection,” Cr Brown said.

“The good news is you can reduce hazards in your home and protect the environment by disposing of these products safely and easily throughout the year at the Wonthaggi permanent drop-off site.”

The new permanent drop-off sites will complement the Detox your Home household chemical collection service, which conducts up to 30 mobile collections across Victoria each year to dispose of hazardous household chemicals.

The permanent drop-off sites enable Victorian householders to dispose of household paint, batteries and CFLs throughout the year; these products will no longer be accepted at the Detox your Home mobile collections.

The Detox your Home mobile collections are also located in close proximity of permanent drop-off sites so householders can conveniently access both services at the same time.

Visit sustainability.vic.gov.au/detoxyourhome for a list of existing and planned drop-off sites and upcoming Detox your Home mobile collections.

Permanent drop-off sites and Detox your Home mobile collections are free services for all Victorian householders, which are administered by Sustainability Victoria in collaboration with local councils and are funded by the Victorian landfill levy.

The products collected through both services are recycled for recovery and diverted from landfill.
