Plans for Cowes Centre on display
Bass Coast Shire Council is inviting the community to comment on plans for the redevelopment of the Cowes Cultural and Community Centre.
A marquee will be set up in the Cowes Town Square in Thompson Avenue in early December for the project team to talk about the concept designs.
The Cultural and Community Centre was identified as a priority project in the Cowes Activity Centre Plan 2015, which was developed with extensive community engagement.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Jordan Crugnale, said the planned redevelopment needs to align with contemporary cultural and community centre practices.
“This precinct is currently quite tired, somewhat compartmentalised and all the functions and users are disconnected from each other,” Cr Crugnale said.
“This is where centralisation will work well to create that buzz and hive of activity that you want out of a multipurpose community facility.
‘With an amazing set of thinkers, creatives and designers on the island, please comment on this concept design to ensure we are thinking laterally and spatially with purpose and function in mind for the users of today and tomorrow.”
Facilities in the concept designs include:
Spaces for genealogical and historical societies
Performance space – theatre and movie hall
Art and craft space
Tourist information and ticketing services
Multi-purpose meeting, event & function spaces
Service areas – kitchens, toilets, preparations areas and storerooms
Office and tenancy space
The project team will be available to chat about the plans from 9.00am to 5.00pm on Friday, 11 December and from 9.00am until 4.00pm on Saturday, 12 December. Local traders are invited to attend the marquee from 5.00pm to 6.30pm on Friday, 11 December.
Everyone is encouraged to drop-in and view the concept design, have a chat with our project team and provide feedback. The marquee will also provide an update on other projects within Cowes.
There’s no need to book – just look for the marquee, drop-in and have your say!
