Capturing San Remo was the focus for artists this week as they visited the town for its upcoming public art project.

The eight artists came from across Victoria to photograph and sketch the San Remo Foreshore in preparation for their concept designs for the $45,000 Tides of Change Public Art Project being delivered as part of Bass Coast Shire Council’s annual Public Art Program.

The site visit was hosted by Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, and Council’s Arts and Culture Administration Officer, Rebecca Scott.

Cr Rothfield said community representatives also met with the artists on the day, as it was important that the final artwork connects to the site and reflects the San Remo community.

“Chairman of San Remo Foreshore Committee of Management, Andy Chappell, spoke to the artists about the reserve, how it is used and the Committee’s future plans,” Cr Rothfield said.

“Speaking on behalf of the Tides of Change community group, Carol Blair inspired the artists with the area’s history, significance and other art projects planned for San Remo.”

Feedback collected from the San Remo community as part of the Tides of Change workshops will influence the final designs.

The preferred design will be chosen by a selection panel consisting of representatives from local community, Phillip Island San Remo Rotary, Tides of Change community group, San Remo Foreshore Committee of Management, San Remo District and Tourism Business Inc, Regional Arts Victoria and Council representatives.

Qualified artists are invited to submit design concepts to Council by 24 February.
