Works begin on Bass Valley Children’s Centre

Bass Coast Shire has appointed TS Constructions Pty Ltd to construct the Bass Valley Children’s Centre, with works expected to begin from 7 November 2016, and take up to 15 months to complete.

SR Excavations Pty Ltd has begun works on the new internal driveway and carpark area, which will be completed before the building works commence, weather permitting.

The new driveway and entrance will be located on the adjoining land east of the existing kindergarten, with the proposed new carpark area located at the rear of the site.

The carpark and driveway entrance works involve the construction of an internal carpark with 32 car parks, as well as intersection improvement works on Corinella Road to help with vehicles turning into the new driveway.

The building works will involve construction and commissioning of all demolition, site work, building elements, and electrical, mechanical and hydraulic services for the new Centre.

The existing sandpit, gazebo, stained glass window water tanks and picnic tables will either be retained or relocated as part of the works.

The existing kindergarten facility will continue to operate for the majority of these works and demolition and final landscaping works for the site are scheduled to happen during the Christmas holiday period of 2017-2018.

The intersection works on Corinella Road will be programmed and coordinated after approvals have been received by VicRoads.

The total project costs are in the order of $2.5 million.

Contributions to this project include; Council ($1.5 million), Department of Education and Training – Children’s Facility Capital Grants ($900,000) and Bass Valley Children’s Group ($70,000).

Council’s General Manager Healthy Communities, David Elder, said the aim of the building project is to construct an integrated children’s centre adjacent to the Bass Valley Primary school and to provide much needed child care facilities to families in Bass Valley area.

“This new facility was developed to incorporate provisions for kindergarten for three and four year olds, long day care, school holiday programs before and after school care, maternal child health services, access to specialise services and parenting programs and community meeting spaces,” Mr Elder said.

“The high level of contribution and commitment to this project from the Bass Valley Children’s Group is acknowledged and appreciated.”

Council recognises that it can be a challenge to deliver the necessary works and not affect key users of the existing kindergarten and Bass Valley Primary School, especially when much of the work is determined by weather conditions, availability of contractors and impacts associated with noise, dust and vibration.

Council’s intention is to maximise the opportunity to carry out works during school holiday periods and temporary protection fencing will be established to protect the existing kindergarten for the new building works.

It is expected that there will be some minor delays to traffic during the works period and appropriate traffic and pedestrian control measures will be implemented onsite during these works.
